To travel within the zone, players need to locate and equip a map showing roads and landmarks. To enter The Red Forest, or Pripyat, the player must find a specific mission to gain clearance into the area.
Those transmission scrolls can also be found in stashes or found on dead stalkers. In order to progress into Dark Valley, one must find a Map/Transmission scroll from a nearby Greenish Radioactive Area (visible when hunting for mutant equipment). There are two zones in Stalker - titled The Zone and Dark Valley. There are no "scavenger-infested" areas in the game, and all mutants can be killed with any weapon from the very beginning of the game. The majority of the area is a large uninhabitable desert. The Zone is a radioactive area around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. Stalker takes place in an area known as The Zone (referred to by some characters as Lost Coast). This client is still active under the name "OpenSteroids". The client is written in C# using mono framework and can be installed on Windows, Linux or Mac OS X. The software allows the user to launch their own servers for MP, SP & CoP but cannot be used to connect to the GSC Game World's servers. There was also an unofficial launcher released in 2016 by users Man-Hunter and Wolffy. However, the game's server files are freely available for download.
Currently it supports cross-platform multiplayer with Windows and Linux only. The server software needed for this is based on ActiveX, which is also used in DirectX 9 games. On July 1st, 2016, GSC Game World opened its servers once again by announcing their own standalone client (StalkerCallOfPripyat), which allows users to play all game modes without the need to download anything. The game's community was able to keep playing through unofficial community servers and mirrors of the official game files. On June 1st, 2012, GSC Game World closed the servers for the game due to it not drawing enough players. The game is played with a keyboard and mouse while using DirectX9 for rendering at 800圆00, with no official mods yet since release. Since it's release, Stalker has managed to maintain a strong player base and achieves between 20 - 25k concurrent players on its live servers. It is set in an alternate timeline of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, where stalkers comb through abandoned areas of the eponymous city to take down mutants and scavengers.
